Editing and reviewing the canon of scientific knowledge is a critical function that should involve checks and balances, distribution among multiple groups, clear objective standards and the disclosure and/or elimination of conflicts of interests. These factors are especially critical when the stakes are high and governments look to the product of scientific endeavor to set public policy, enact legislation and determine the future economic course of action. What you need to understand what Climategate revealed about global warming literature:

Few people understand the real significance of Climategate, the now-famous hacking of emails from the University of East Anglia Climatic Research Unit (CRU). Most see the contents as demonstrating some arbitrary manipulating of various climate data sources in order to fit preconceived hypotheses (true), or as stonewalling and requesting colleagues to destroy emails to the United Nations Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) in the face of potential or actual Freedom of Information requests (also true).

But there's something much, much worse going on—a silencing of climate scientists, akin to filtering what goes in the bible, that will have consequences for public policy, including the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) recent categorization of carbon dioxide as a "pollutant."

The bible I'm referring to, of course, is the refereed scientific literature. It's our canon, and it's all we have really had to go on in climate science (until the Internet has so rudely interrupted). When scientists make putative compendia of that literature, such as is done by the U.N. climate change panel every six years, the writers assume that the peer-reviewed literature is a true and unbiased sample of the state of climate science.

Referred literature has been completely compromised and the EPA, having relied entirely on the IPCC findings, has now lost the very basis of its findings!

You'll want to consider this article by the American Thinker (carefully):

The CRU emails have revealed how the normal conventions of the peer review process appear to have been compromised by a team* of global warming scientists, with the willing cooperation of the editor of the International Journal of Climatology (IJC), Glenn McGregor. The team spent nearly a year preparing and publishing a paper that attempted to rebut a previously published paper in IJC by Douglass, Christy, Pearson and Singer (DCPS). The DCPS paper, reviewed and accepted in the traditional manner, had shown that the IPCC models that predicted significant "global warming" in fact largely disagreed with the observational data.

We will let the reader judge whether this team effort, revealed in dozens of emails and taking nearly a year, involves inappropriate behavior including (a) unusual cooperation between authors and editor, (b) misstatement of known facts, (c) character assassination, (d) avoidance of traditional scientific give-and-take, (e) using confidential information, (f) misrepresentation (or misunderstanding) of the scientific question posed by DCPS, (g) withholding data, and more.

Read the rest here. At a minimum, the CRU emails seem to reveal a group of individuals so driven by their ideology that the intellectual honesty of the publications require scrutiny and review.

Nor would they meretriciously bandy the word “deniers” to disparage skepticism that shocks communicants in the faith-based global warming community.

Skeptics about the shrill certitudes concerning catastrophic man-made warming are skeptical because climate change is constant: From millennia before the Medieval Warm Period (800 to 1300), through the Little Ice Age (1500 to 1850), and for millennia hence, climate change is always a 100% certainty. Skeptics doubt that the scientists’ models, which cannot explain the present, infallibly map the distant future.

In the latest IPCC study, there was only a single chapter (Chapter 9 — Understanding and Attributing Climate Change) that specifically dealt with the hypothesis that human CO2 was the cause of global warming. The authors of that chapter concluded that human CO2 was the cause. This key, critical IPCC chapter had only 53 climate scientist authors. This chapter was reviewed by 55 climate scientist reviewers. Only 7 of the reviewers approved of the chapter, either completely or partially. So, throughout the entire climate scientist world, only a total of 60 climate scientists approved of the IPCC’s conclusion that human CO2 was the cause. And, as a result of Climategate scandal, the number is only 25 that will come forward to support all the lies, corruption, and science fraud that the IPCC has condoned or sponsored, take your pick.
